Hangry Thought of the Day:  I hate it when known liberals treat hired help like dirt!

Today we are going to be talking about another recipe I whipped up from the book "Good and Cheap" by Leanne Brown.  The recipe is Dal.  Dal is Indian for lentils. While this recipe my not be pretty to look at, it gets the job done.  With the little bit of ginger, some spices, and onion and garlic this recipe made enough to last almost the whole week.  So let's look at the dish:

  • 1 tbsp of butter (or some other oil to grease the pan)
  • 1 medium onion chapped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp black mustard seeds (I used yellow because that is what I obtained during the pantry priming phase)
  • 1 tsp of turmeric (I skipped this)
  • 2 cloves of garlic (I used three)
  • 1 jalapeno finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger grated
  • 2 cups lentils
  • salt and pepper to taste (you will need lots of salt)

Heat up the pan and melt the butter, coating the pan.  Add the onion and cook for 1 minute

Add cumin and mustard and cook until you start to hear them pop and sizzle.

Add garlic, turmeric, and garlic.  Cook 3 - 4 minutes, then add ginger and stir fry for 30 seconds.

Add the lentils and enough water to cover them.

Cook until tender.  Cooking time will very depending on the type of lentils you used.  Mine took about 35 minutes.

Pooof!  You get Dal!

Got a second little treat from work today.  Some nice little cheese bites.  I probably should have saved some of these for next week, but they were SO good!
